Energy is essential to human progress. According to the International Energy Agency, global energy demand could be as much as 55% higher in 2030 as in 2005 – with the majority of the extra demand coming from developing nations.
Meeting this demand alone is a huge challenge for the energy industry. But it creates another: because the continuing predominance of fossil fuels for the foreseeable future will mean a substantial rise in CO2 emissions.
So how do we balance these priorities? First, we need to produce the energy needed to meet the world’s growing demand; second, we need to improve energy efficiency, so that we use our natural resources wisely and protect the environment; and third, we need to find technological breakthroughs that enable us to meet growing demand and reduce emissions.
