assessment and recognition

Fleet Assessment Tool
ExxonMobil has developed a Hauler Assessment Tool which is a pre-condition to participate in any ExxonMobil tender.

The hauler conducts a self assessment (at least anually) while ExxonMobil carries out spot checks. These include both internal and external aspects. The tool includes sections covering all three safety management systems, namely OIMS, VSMG and STOPs. It requires verifications and measurements to be collected by the haulers. There are additional sections specifically to assess the award of ‘Global Hauler of the Year.’

Safety Performance Indicators
Year-on-year performance measurement is an ExxonMobil requirement of all its haulers. Specific criteria is outlined for safety performance indicators (e.g., motor vehicle accidents are recorded regardless of fault or cause).

Standard indicators are:

Measure The Safety Performance
a. # of Vehicle Accidents
b. # of Personal Injuries
c. # of Quality Incidents
d. # of Environmental Incidents
e. # of recorded 'Near Miss' reports

Continuous Improvement
The performance indicators show top line results. If a hauler’s safety performance is trending negative, he will be subject to greater scrutiny. The company will work closely with that hauler to correct deficiencies that may be due to weaknesses in one of the safety management systems. Continuous improvements can be managed through processes such as:
1. Regular assessments
2. Gap analysis
3. Gap closure plans
4. Regular review and stewardship of both systems and close out actions
5. Verification and measurements

Recognition And Reward
Recognition and Reward are key elements of any safety program where the human element is so important. The main emphasis is on appraising and recognising individual drivers, while for the hauler there is an annual award.

Driver Recognition
a. Individual performance appraisal
b. Safe Truck Driving Competition & theoretical test
c. Award for safety milestone achievements (million miles / kms without incident)
d. Safety awards at Drivers meetings
e. Driver of the Year
