The commitment of ExxonMobil to safety is that “Nobody Gets Hurt.” Our goal is to achieve an incident-free workplace with zero personal injuries, zero accidents and zero spills. We are not there yet, but we are making good progress. Today, we are already industry leader in safety in most areas and continue to improve.
As a signatory of the European Road Safety Charter, ExxonMobil is committed to sharing its road safety experiences with haulers and other stakeholders and thus to contributing to raising standards across Europe. The aim of the Charter is to halve the number of road deaths in Europe by 2010. This would help to safe as many as 25,000 lives each year.
We also support a variety of schemes which promote safe road use to young people. Around our Augusta refinery in Italy, we run the “Safety on two wheels” initiative which aims to provide police-led training courses and highway code advice to teenage motorcyclists.
In the UK, we support “Safe Drive Stay Alive” shows for young drivers, and we sponsored a “traffic garden” in the Netherlands which helps children learn to behave safely in traffic.
We believe that the key elements required to improve safety performance are a company safety culture, structured safety management programs, effective tools and assessment and recognition programs combined with a strong focus on human behaviour. These elements have helped us to significantly improve our road safety performance over the past years.
With ExxonMobil, safety is not only a priority. It is a value that is at the core of our culture.
To improve road safety performance ExxonMobil applies three connecting management systems.
Focusing on human behaviour to improve safety performance has been successful within ExxonMobil.
ExxonMobil has produced a ‘Professional Drivers’ toolkit which contains a number of safety-related topics which are available to our hauliers and contractors to support their actions.
ExxonMobil has developed a Hauler Assessment Tool which is a pre-condition to participate in any ExxonMobil tender.
Disciplined systems have helped to improve performance.
