| | Making Lives Better “As a responsible energy company, we believe that good citizenship means helping meet the growth in demand for energy in an economically, environmentally and socially responsible manner.” Lee R. Raymond, Chairman and CEO
Globally and in Europe, we are making improvements in equivalent areas of our citizenship performance – fewer spills, greater energy efficiency, fewer safety incidents, further contributions to communities. We are also performing strongly as a business, which underpins our ability to contribute in these ways. Exemplary citizenship underpins that performance. You can’t have one without the other.
In 2003, we made significant improvements in our performance:- Energy efficiency – We achieved record performance in energy efficiency across our global refining business
- Environment & Safety – We achieved the fewest oil spill and safety incidents in our history
- Community Engagement – We continued to make a positive contribution and strengthen local communities, including the support of health initiatives in the fight against malaria and funding of education programmes
- Economic contribution – Our global economic contribution (such as wages, taxes and payments to suppliers) exceeded € 200 billion (US$244 billion). In Europe alone, ExxonMobil contributed Euro 38 billion in tax income for governments.
